The above photograph was created as a result of researching the history of St. Lucy/ St. Patrick's Church on Dekalb Avenue in Brooklyn. On a walk through the neighborhood, it was seemingly pleasant, rubber duckies and all. After further research, I found that the church was involved in a child abuse scandal.
This collage is a conglomeration of my own photos that I took to document my admiration for this space and images from the internet. The image of St. Lucy, who was punished by getting her eyes gauged out, shows her defiantly presenting a platter of her eyes. A photo of the abusive Sunday School teacher is overlaid with a portrait of St. Patrick, with a photo of the church's mass to the left. Above is an article explaining the seriousness of the matter.
